Frequently Asked Questions

Below you will find frequently asked questions about Tillman Hill Kennels and Labradors in general. For further questions regarding availability, applications or deposits, please contact us by reaching out with the information at the bottom of this page. For other health related questions, always consult with your state licensed Veterinarian.

  • How do I reserve a puppy?
Get in touch with us to request an application. Puppies can be reserved once your deposit is paid in full.
  • How do I make a payment?
You can pay via Paypal, Venmo, or CashApp. If you are paying in person, we can take cerfitied funds (Certified Check or Money Order) or cash. No personal checks will be accepted.
  • Do you have any older or retired dogs for sale?
We do have retired dogs for sale, available to approved applicants only. It's our priority that our retired dogs go to loving, caring homes as indoor companions.
  • What are your visiting hours?
Pick ups or visits are by appointment only. Please reach out if you are interested in making an appointment.
  • What do I need before bringing my puppy home?
    1. An appropriately sized crate or gate. 2. A dog bed or mat. 3. A lease, collar, and identification tag. 4. Appropriate food based on age (ask for recommendations). 5. Toys! Kong toys or other heavy duty toys are recommended.
  • How much grooming does a Labrador need?
Labradors need to be brushed on a regular basis (about once a week). This will also help keep shedding under control. A "slicker" brush, which you can purchase at any pet store, works nicely. Labradors, like all dogs, will also need to have their toenails clipped regularly. You can get a canine nail clipper at any pet store and your Veterinarian can demonstrate the best way to clip their nails. Labradors do not need to be bathed frequently, as the coat does not need constant attention. A true bath, which includes shampooing the coat, is only necessary if your dog smells bad. Shampooing too often is not a good idea as shampoo tends to strip the natural oils out of their coats. An oiled coat easily repels dirt and water.
  • How does coat color inheritance work?
Two sets of genes, not one, control a Labrador's coloration. One set of genes controls whether the Lab will be dark (black or chocolate) or light (yellow). Dark is dominant over light, thus a Labrador who's genotype is EE (homozygous dominant) or Ee (heterozygous) will be dark; only Labradors that are ee (homozygous recessive) can be light.
  • How are Labradors with children?
As a breed, Labradors tend to be good with children. However, as with any dog, it is not a good idea to let puppies and children play unattended. Both children and puppies are unaware of their own size and strength and could accidentally injure on another.
  • How long do Labradors live?
Lifespans vary from dog to dog, but generally you can expect a healthy Labrador to live between 10 to 13 human years.
